Christoph Wundrak started to compose and arrange at the same time, when he started to deal with Jazz-improvisation in the middle of the 1970ies. From the very beginning he felt eager to translate theoretic knowlede into own compositions. Until end of the 80ies he was more or less inspired by jazzmusicians / -composers like Horace Silver, Nat Adderly, Clifford Brown, Thad Jones and Lee Morgan.
As the Blues – as style and musical form - has had a strong influence on CW to become a musician, it is - at least in a latent way - still caracteritic for his compositons.
Until the beginning of the 90ies, CW wrote exclusevly for ensembles, in which he was also playing as musician (Jazz-Combos). Since the foundation of Smart Metals Hornets (1990), who above all perform compositions by CW, also other ensemble-leaders and groups have become interested in him as a composer/arranger. So, since 1992 he has been writing on commission for different instrumentations, but above all - the wind-ensembles, of course.
Approximately since 2000 CW has worked more and more on the fusion of rock-, jazz- and blueselements with different kinds of popular folkmusic – first of all the music of the Alps - in his original and humorous way.
Already in his childhood, the power of original alpine folk-music - especially the blown one - has been decisive for Christoph Wundrak to become interested in brass instruments.
In his compositions sometimes he likes to use „classical forms“, like in 3-parted concerto-form (allegro - lento - presto), or the fugue (in two or three parts)
